Passage:

Philippians 1:9-10 (NLT)

9I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding.  10For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return.

Thought/Application:

At first glance we see that Paul is writing these beautiful words of love and encouragement in a letter, recorded in the Bible, to the people of Philippi.  Oh how we wish we had a friend like Paul!  Can you imagine receiving such a letter, a letter where we are not just encouraged, but where we are told that we are being prayed for?  Oh how comforted and blessed these people must have felt!  But wait a minute…. Let’s take another look…. Aren’t all the words in the Bible God’s beautiful gift of love and encouragement to US?  Aren’t all the words “breathed out by God” for us? (2 Timothy 3:15)  Aren’t the words “living and active” for us? (Hebrews 4:13)  So let’s read these words again...  I pray that your love, (insert your name), will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you, (insert your name), to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return.  Do you see it now?  Can’t you hear it?  God is praying for us!  God, the Creator of the entire universe, loves us and wants us to know Him and to be in relationship with Him forever!  So God prays for us because He knows that our relationship with Him is what really matters!

So the next time you open your Bible, just soak in our Savior’s love!  And pray that God will open your heart and mind so that you will grow in your knowledge and understanding of Him.  And pray that God will help you to understand what really matters so that you may live a pure and blameless life until the day of Christ’s return.  All glory to Him!

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of your living Word.  And we thank you that you know each one of us intimately and that you love us so entirely that You continue to pray for us so that we will know You, the One who truly matters.  In Jesus Name we pray.  Amen.
